The
infamous electro duo are back after a three year break with a new
album, dubbed Love Boat, which is one of their most diverse
collaborations in years.
Believe it or not, the boys who sailed on the crest of Abba have
managed to squeeze in some neat hip-hop touches, techno, gospel,
cool keyboards and orchestrated Broadway into their latest work.
It's big, it's bold and it's tear-jerking in places.
Gay.com UK caught up with Andy Bell to find out what the guys
have been doing in their time out, tap into the inspiration
behind their latest baby and get some insight into the boy who
claims that behind the sequins and high camp he really is very
normal.
Jan: So what have you been up to in your long break?
Andy: We wrote the songs about two years ago and we wrote
16 songs in all. The date for finishing was April this year. Weve
been recording off and on and otherwise Ive been hanging
out in Spain. Time just seems to go.
Jan: Why have you decided to make Spain your adopted home?
Andy: It was like a fantasy I had. Me and my boyfriend and
I looked around the Costa Brava and Costa Blanca and we didnt
like it. But wed had lots of holidays in Ibiza and on the
way back we said, "Why not go and look at this property
in Majorca?" We were lucky in that we found this finca,
an old farmhouse. We bought the land, knocked down the house and
built it again. That has kept us busy. Ive also been doing
my house up in London and that has taken two years.
Jan: So have you become hot on DIY?
Andy: What! Watching all those stupid TV programmes.
Jan: So what was your inspiration for the album?
Andy: We were amazed at how fast the songs came out cos
normally if nothing comes out in half an hour it isnt worth
pursuing. I think the real inspiration though was that we are
hungry again cos the last two didnt sell so well
that and my flat has good writing karma.
Jan: What kind of music do you listen to?
Andy: All my records have been in storage and Ive
just got them back so Ive been listening to Dead or Alive,
The Communards, some of Jimmys stuff. New stuff Ive
got, I like Aqua. I like Motown.
Jan: So do you and your boyfriend argue over music?
Andy: Only in so much as I am a big Kate Bush fan and hes
a Joni Mitchell fan, so its a fight between those two
really.
Jan: So can we expect a truly over-the-top camp video to go
with your new creation?
Andy: Vince directed the video and I havent seen it
yet. He thinks that at 40 he is too old to be in pop videos for
some reason so he has had lots of cardboard cut-outs made of
himself that collapse. I am looking very Neil Diamond, singing
the song and Im flying along with my microphone and holding
it like a broomstick. Not very camp.
Jan: Erasure are known as being a gay act, even though Vince
is straight. Does it bother him at all?
Andy: No, he does not mind at all. He is gayer than I am.
He has more gay friends than me and he is always off up to
Manchester disappearing into clubs and dancing on podiums. He is
much more of a party animal than me, but he balances that by
going off walking in the Yorkshire Dales and things.
Jan: Do you still go clubbing?
Andy: No, not really. I spend half my time in Spain. No
one knows who I am there and it is much more low key. And no I
dont go to Ibiza any more.
Jan: Youve been held responsible for the Abba revival,
do you think that is true?
Andy: No, not really. We caught the crest of the wave, it
was going to happen anyway. Maybe we turned it into a tidal wave.
They should have an Abba channel and be done with it. I get fed
up of hearing the same songs over and over again.
Jan: Do you think your fans are predominantly gay?
Andy: If you go to an Erasure concert you would assume it
would be gay, but it is more like Butlins lots of families.
Yes there are gay people there and it's always very open. But I
couldnt imagine youd get much trouble. I just happen
to be gay and I am making music.
Jan: And finally which is your favourite Abba cover?
Andy: The best Abba cover so far is Blancmange's The Day
Before You Came. That was quite a few years ago.
Erasures new album, entitled Love Boat,
is out on October 23rd. The first single from the album, Freedom,
is released on October 9th.
